The Union Square was originally a stopover point for 19th century travellers heading to the state capital, Albany . Three statues surround the park : George Washington (south), Abraham Lincoln (north), and Lafayette (east), the latter of which was sculpted by the Statute of Liberty ‘s sculptor, Bartholdi. Today the park is quite popular for its year-round Green Market on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
