Statue of Liberty

Public access to the balcony surrounding the torch has been barred for safety reasons since 1916. This statue of Lady Liberty is 151 ft (46 meters) in height and was a gift from the people of France on the occasion of the United States Centennial in 1886. It stands in New York harbor on Liberty Island. In her left hand, she holds the Declaration of Independence and her right hand she lifts a torch. If you want to climb 354 stairs (the equivalent of 22 stories) you can stand on the observation deck in the lady's crown. Ferries leave regularly from Battery Park .
