Battery Park City

Until the 1970’s this area was the only public beach on Manhattan Island. In 1966 Governor Rockefeller came up with a plan to develop a residential complex in lower Manhattan, but due to New York City’s fiscal crisis and some protests, development was halted in 1977. In 1979, a new plan was adopted and construction resumed. At its core is the World Financial Center, consisting of 4 high-rise office buildings. The view from the 1.2-mile riverside esplanade is fantastic.
