Lower Manhattan
The southern part of Manhattan all the way to the Upper Bay, is where New York City originated, having been settled first by the Dutch in the 17th century, and then by the British. The streets here still run as narrow and complicated, not having been laid out in squares as was the rest of Manhattan. This is the center of New York's financial and law establishment; the core of world economy. From Battery Park at the very end of the island, one can see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island where immigrants were admitted during the 19th century.
